AR peak identification
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Glacier National Park mountain guide
Glacier National Park rewards anyone who can slow down and read the terrain. Epicrest helps name the peaks, browse surrounding context, and keep private notes from the mountains you visit.
Field context
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Browse nearby summits, elevation, prominence, weather, and route context from the map before you commit to a plan.
With Epicrest Pro, save a selected Outdoor area before a trip so downloaded map and place context remains available when service is limited.
Keep summit notes on device, with optional private iCloud sync. Epicrest does not use server-side photo storage for journals.
Going-to-the-Sun Road connects very different mountain settings: Lake McDonald and Avalanche on the west, Logan Pass on the Continental Divide, and St. Mary on the east. Along it, Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake are forest-and-water outings, while Hidden Lake and the Highline Trail begin in exposed alpine terrain. Many Glacier is a separate approach for Grinnell Glacier and Swiftcurrent-area hikes. Treat those areas as different plans rather than pins that can be rearranged after parking fills.
The NPS manages more than 700 miles of Glacier trails, but mileage alone hides the important differences. High paths can hold snow into July, footbridges and seasonal facilities come and go, and a trail report is a dated observation rather than a promise. Start in Epicrest by browsing the exact valley, trailhead, and visible summits. Full route detail is available where a live record exists, but the NPS trail-status report decides whether the route is currently open and what hazards have been reported.
For 2026, Glacier does not require a vehicle reservation to enter the park, but that does not make Logan Pass parking unrestricted. From July 1 through September 7, private-vehicle parking at Logan Pass has a three-hour maximum enforced around the clock, using a free timestamped dashboard permit after a driver finds a space. The NPS presents Hidden Lake Overlook as an outing that can fit the window. Longer routes such as Highline to Granite Park or The Loop should use the ticketed shuttle rather than treating the lot as all-day parking.
The 2026 shuttle is not a hop-on system, and tickets are tied to a date, time, and boarding point. It also does not serve Avalanche Lake or Trail of the Cedars. Vehicle length, width, and height restrictions apply on the alpine road, whose opening and closing depend on snow and weather. Check the current transportation page rather than a saved itinerary. These rules are year-specific and may change after this guide's review date.
Cell coverage is little or nonexistent outside Apgar and St. Mary. If you have Epicrest Pro, create or refresh an offline Outdoor area while connected; public iPhone version 2.2 supports areas up to 50 miles and up to 15 installed packs. Downloading map and place context is useful, but it does not update a bear closure or replace the official park map, navigation equipment, water, layers, rain gear, and emergency plan. Let someone know the route and expected return.
Glacier is grizzly and black bear habitat. The NPS says to carry accessible bear spray, make noise, never run from a bear, and remain at least 100 yards away. Use AR only from a safe, stationary place and back-check labels against the map; steep relief and magnetic interference can affect alignment. Afterward, add the place, date, route notes, and conditions to the private Journal. Entries remain on the iPhone with optional private iCloud sync, and journal photos are not stored on Epicrest servers.
