Great Smoky Mountains mountain guide

A Great Smoky Mountains mountain guide for iPhone

The Great Smoky Mountains can make peaks feel hidden behind ridges, trees, and weather. Epicrest helps bring names and context back into the view while keeping your summit record private.

Field context

Epicrest tools for great smoky mountains mountain guide

AR peak identification

Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.

Map-based discovery

Browse nearby summits, elevation, prominence, weather, and route context from the map before you commit to a plan.

Pro offline areas

With Epicrest Pro, save a selected Outdoor area before a trip so downloaded map and place context remains available when service is limited.

Private summit journal

Keep summit notes on device, with optional private iCloud sync. Epicrest does not use server-side photo storage for journals.

Choose a park district before choosing a peak

The Smokies are not one continuous scenic drive. Newfound Gap Road crosses the range between Tennessee and North Carolina and reaches the access road for Kuwohi, the park's highest summit. Cades Cove uses an 11-mile loop through a broad mountain basin. Roaring Fork, Cataloochee, and Deep Creek each have separate roads, trail networks, and seasonal patterns. A route that appears nearby across a wooded ridge may require a long drive around the range.

Use Epicrest's map to focus on one district, browse peaks and places, and inspect live route detail where data exists. At Newfound Gap or another open overlook, AR can help distinguish layered ridges when the view and heading are reliable. Dense forest, fog, and overlapping terrain make cross-checking essential. Compare labels to the map and visible drainages rather than trusting a camera result by itself. Epicrest is not a route finder through unmaintained terrain.

Know the parking and 2026 access rules

Great Smoky Mountains National Park charges no entrance fee, but any vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes needs a parking tag. Purchase the appropriate tag before leaving reliable service and display it correctly. For 2026, Cades Cove Loop Road is vehicle-free every Wednesday from May 6 through September 30; the parking-tag requirement still applies and parking remains limited. Kuwohi Road is scheduled seasonally through November 29, weather permitting, and can close for snow, ice, or hazards.

As of this August 1 review, Laurel Falls Trail remains closed for rehabilitation, Bullhead Trail has weekday construction closures through November 19, and Hurricane Helene damage continues to affect some eastern trails. These are current-condition examples, not permanent facts. Read the live closure page immediately before departure. Newfound Gap, Little River, and Cades Cove roads are generally maintained year-round, but weather and emergencies can still close them without fitting an itinerary.

Prepare for weak signal, water, and wildlife

Cell service is very limited across the park. Epicrest Pro can create or refresh an offline Outdoor area up to 50 miles, with up to 15 installed packs in public iPhone version 2.2. Download while connected and also carry an authoritative map and navigation backup. Offline context cannot update a washed-out bridge, storm closure, or weather warning. Waterfalls and streams are serious hazards; never climb slick rocks around falls, and do not assume a crossing is safe because a line appears on a map.

Remain at least 50 yards from bears and 25 yards from elk, never feed wildlife, and do not stop in the travel lane for a view. During a safe trail stop, use AR as a naming aid and verify it against the map. After the outing, add the district, place, route, date, and personal notes to the private Journal. Entries stay on the iPhone with optional private iCloud sync, and journal photos are not stored on Epicrest servers. This keeps a useful record without turning wildlife or sensitive locations into a public feed.
