AR peak identification
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Mountains near Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe makes elevation feel close, but the surrounding ridges and Sierra summits still deserve context. Epicrest helps identify peaks, browse terrain, and save the mountain days that matter.
Field context
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Browse nearby summits, elevation, prominence, weather, and route context from the map before you commit to a plan.
With Epicrest Pro, save a selected Outdoor area before a trip so downloaded map and place context remains available when service is limited.
Keep summit notes on device, with optional private iCloud sync. Epicrest does not use server-side photo storage for journals.
Tahoe's full ring of ridges is easier to understand as several distinct zones. On the west and southwest shore, Emerald Bay, Eagle Falls, Echo Lakes, and Desolation Wilderness lead into granite lake basins and peaks such as Tallac. The north and northeast shore reaches the Tahoe Rim Trail near Brockway, Tahoe Meadows, and Mount Rose. The southeast side connects Van Sickle, Kingsbury, and the Freel Peak area. A clear lakeshore view can make these look close together, but trailheads, jurisdictions, and drive times are spread around a large basin.
Use Epicrest's map to focus on one zone and inspect named peaks, places, and available route details rather than browsing the entire rim as a single day plan. From a stationary overlook, the AR view can help distinguish the near basin wall from a summit behind it, but verify the label against the map. Smoke, haze, reflected lake light, dense trees, steep local relief, and compass interference all reduce confidence. The app supports observation; it does not turn a skyline match into a navigable route.
Desolation Wilderness requires a wilderness permit for entry, with additional reservation rules for overnight travel. Current Forest Service orders require bear-resistant food storage, including a hard-sided canister for overnight visits to Desolation. Tahoe Basin National Forest lands also operate under year-round fire restrictions that sharply limit where wood and charcoal fires are allowed. Those rules apply even when the route looks like an easy continuation from a developed lakeshore.
At Emerald Bay, California State Parks publishes current hours, fees, facility restrictions, and dog rules. On the Nevada side, Sand Harbor uses seasonal day-use vehicle reservations and commonly reaches capacity; the reservation system and entry window must be checked for the actual visit date. On the Tahoe Rim Trail, snow, downed trees, water availability, bicycle restrictions in Wilderness or on Pacific Crest Trail segments, and trailhead parking vary segment by segment. Read the trail association's latest field report, then confirm permits and closures with the land manager.
Before: choose the shore and trailhead first, review full route detail where it exists, then check weather, smoke, forest alerts, trail conditions, parking, permits, and bear-storage requirements. Epicrest Pro can create or refresh an offline Outdoor area up to 50 miles; the current iPhone release allows up to 15 installed packs. A Tahoe-sized trip may need careful placement rather than one oversized assumption. Downloaded data does not update a closure after you leave service, so carry official maps and a separate navigation backup.
During: use AR from a safe overlook or trail stop, not while driving or moving near an exposed edge. Cross-check the skyline against the map. After: log the exact park, viewpoint, peak, date, and conditions in the private Journal. Entries stay on the device with optional private iCloud sync, and journal photos are never stored on Epicrest servers. Recording whether a route held snow, had water, or suffered smoke is useful personal context for a future visit, but it should never be published as a current trail report.

FAQ
Epicrest supports AR and map-based peak discovery when location, heading, visibility, and peak data are sufficient.
With Epicrest Pro, create or refresh a selected Outdoor area before the trip. Offline context is useful for reference, but live conditions require current sources.
Epicrest provides peak and route context where available. It is not a dedicated turn-by-turn trail navigation app.
