The honest difference

AllTrails is a trail platform. Its official iPhone listing and help center emphasize searchable trail pages, community reviews and photos, route statistics, navigation, activity recording, and sharing. Its current membership structure separates a free Base plan from paid Plus and Peak plans. Plus adds downloadable trails, parks, and map areas, wrong-turn alerts, trail conditions, 3D previews, Live Share, and printable maps. Epicrest is a newer iPhone outdoor companion, not an AllTrails-sized trail community. Public version 2.2 begins with outdoor places and mountain context: Get Outside Today recommendations, parks, peaks, trails, lakes, viewpoints, map discovery, AR peak labels, basic weather, route details where records exist, Plans, and a private Journal. Epicrest Pro adds detailed forecasts, weather layers and windows, extra map styles, selected offline Outdoor areas, journal photo tools, insights, annual recap, and exports. Coverage varies by place, and Epicrest does not provide community trail reviews or dedicated turn-by-turn navigation.

Where AllTrails is clearly stronger

Choose AllTrails when the trail itself is the product you need. Its community can provide recent photos and reviews, its search is designed around established routes and trail-friendly attributes, and Navigate follows the selected route. Plus and Peak add a more complete trail-navigation package: offline downloads, wrong-turn alerts, Live Share, 3D previews, and richer condition planning. Peak's custom-route tools are also a better fit when drawing or modifying a route is the main task.

Those strengths come with a community-data tradeoff. Reviews and photos are observations from other users, not land-manager notices, and a popular route can still be closed, rerouted, hazardous, or inappropriate for the day. Verify access, permits, fire restrictions, avalanche conditions, and closures with the official manager. Wrong-turn alerts also depend on device GPS, a loaded route, settings, and battery; they are useful assistance, not an emergency guarantee.

Where Epicrest is meaningfully different

Choose Epicrest when the outing begins before a trail has been selected. Get Outside Today can surface different place types by intent, while the map connects parks, peaks, trailheads, routes, water, viewpoints, boundaries, weather, and practical place facts where data exists. AR peak labels answer a question AllTrails' official materials do not position as a core job: “what mountain is that?” Plans keep future objectives separate from the Journal of completed visits.

The privacy model is also deliberately different. Epicrest has no public follower or review feed. Journal entries live on the iPhone and may sync through the user's private iCloud when enabled; journal photos are not stored on Epicrest servers. That is a strength for people who want a personal field record, and a limitation for anyone seeking community reports. Epicrest's smaller product and data footprint means route and place coverage can vary. Use it for context and private records, not as a substitute for authoritative maps or on-trail navigation.

Using both is a valid answer

The two apps can form a sensible sequence. Use AllTrails to compare community trail pages, read recent observations, select a route, and navigate it with the appropriate plan and offline preparation. Use Epicrest to identify the skyline, understand adjacent outdoor places, compare broader weather and terrain context, save a future Plan, and keep the trip in a private Journal afterward. Duplication is only wasteful if both apps are being asked to do the same job.

Before leaving service, open every downloaded asset and confirm it works. Carry an official map or navigation backup, sufficient battery, and the equipment the route demands. Neither app knows your skills, group condition, or every field hazard. The best choice is the one whose limitations you understand and whose strengths align with the decision in front of you.
