AR peak identification
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Mountains near Denver
Denver sits at the edge of a mountain wall that changes by neighborhood, weather, and season. Epicrest helps you read the Front Range from the city, a trailhead, or a weekend basecamp.
Field context
Use the iPhone camera view to understand the peaks in front of you when location and sensor context are available.
Browse nearby summits, elevation, prominence, weather, and route context from the map before you commit to a plan.
With Epicrest Pro, save a selected Outdoor area before a trip so downloaded map and place context remains available when service is limited.
Keep summit notes on device, with optional private iCloud sync. Epicrest does not use server-side photo storage for journals.
Denver's western horizon compresses many layers into one view. The first useful distinction is between foothill landmarks such as North Table Mountain and Lookout Mountain and higher Front Range summits farther west. Red Rocks Park gives a close look at the tilted sandstone edge of the range; its Trading Post, Geologic Overlook, and Red Rocks trails are short enough for a partial day but have activity-specific rules. North Table Mountain adds mesa-top views and more than 15 miles of trails, while Apex Park climbs into steeper, shaded terrain on Lookout Mountain.
Those places answer a different question from a high-country day. Golden Gate Canyon State Park reaches forest, meadows, rocky peaks, and Panorama Point, where Colorado Parks and Wildlife describes a long view of the Continental Divide. It also has an entrance fee, designated uses, and seasonal conditions. Epicrest can help compare the visible peaks, available routes, elevation, and weather context before you drive, but travel time from Denver is not a measure of mountain difficulty. Altitude, exposure, storms, snow, and trail surface change much faster than the city forecast suggests.
Red Rocks and Genesee are Denver Mountain Parks, North Table Mountain and Apex are Jefferson County Open Space, and Golden Gate Canyon is a Colorado state park. Their rules do not merge just because the trailheads sit along the same western corridor. Denver Mountain Parks are open from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset. Jeffco pages publish wildlife closures and maintenance notices; for example, North Table Mountain uses seasonal closures to protect nesting raptors. State-park passes, camping reservations, dog rules, and trail designations apply at Golden Gate Canyon.
Check the exact managing agency immediately before departure, including its closure page and fire restrictions. At Red Rocks, event operations can change vehicle and pedestrian access around the amphitheatre even while the larger park remains a recreation destination. At Apex, alternating-use or directional rules can matter to hikers and mountain bikers. In Golden Gate Canyon, cell and internet service can be absent, backcountry camping is only in designated reserved sites, and seasonal road work or winter closures can change the approach. A generic map pin does not carry any of those operational facts.
Before: use map discovery to separate a short Red Rocks walk, a mesa loop at North Table Mountain, and a longer state-park outing. Review full live route fields where data exists, check weather at the actual place, and confirm official status. If you have Epicrest Pro, create or refresh an offline Outdoor area while connected; Pro areas can span up to 50 miles, with up to 15 installed packs in the current iPhone release. The downloaded area is preparation, not a live closure feed or a replacement for an authoritative navigation map.
During: stop at a safe viewpoint before opening the AR peak view. Compare any label to the map, visible ridges, and your direction of travel; magnetic interference and a wide plains horizon can affect alignment. After: add the park or summit, date, route notes, and observed conditions to the private Journal. Entries stay on the iPhone and may sync through private iCloud when enabled; journal photos do not go to Epicrest servers. Over time, that makes repeat foothill outings useful for judging your own pace and seasonal preferences without creating a public profile.
