Outdoor insights

Outdoor stats and insights from your own outings

Epicrest is an all-outdoor-places companion for iPhone, and Outdoor Insights turns the parks, trails, lakes, viewpoints, and peaks you actually visit into private, deterministic stats. Trends, records, favorite routes, known gain, and Planning Health are computed locally from your field journal and plans, then gathered into a Year in Epicrest recap. No feed, no ranking against strangers, just a quiet field tool that reflects your year back to you.

What Outdoor Insights surfaces

Trends and records

See how your outings move over time and which entries stand out, from busiest months to your longest known routes, all drawn from your own journal.

Favorite routes

Surface the trails and roads you return to most, with the length, surface, and access context that made them worth repeating.

Known gain

Add up elevation gain from routes where that data exists. Known gain is an honest total, so entries without route data never inflate the number.

Planning Health

Track how your plans are progressing, from Ready and Needs route to Check weather and Someday, so the next outing is easier to choose.

Stats built from your journal, not a feed

Every number in Outdoor Insights comes from the places and summits you logged in your private field journal, across the full range of outdoor places Epicrest covers, parks and public lands, trails and trailheads, lakes and waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, campgrounds, and peaks. The math is deterministic and runs locally on your iPhone, so the same entries always produce the same result. Nothing is ranked against other people, and your journal stays on device with optional private iCloud sync.

Because Insights reads from what you actually recorded, it rewards honest logging rather than performative activity. Add a note, a tag, or a route to an entry and the trends, records, and favorite routes sharpen accordingly, on your terms and at your pace.

Honest totals with known gain

Elevation is easy to overstate, so Epicrest is careful here. Known gain sums the elevation gain from routes where that data exists, never the elevation of the peaks themselves. If you logged a summit without a route, or visited a place that has no mapped gain, it simply does not pad the total. That keeps the number trustworthy as a planning and reflection aid rather than a vanity figure.

The same honest hedging runs through the rest of Insights. Where route, weather, or place data is missing, Epicrest says so instead of guessing. These stats are for understanding your own year outdoors, not a safety or navigation source, so pair them with current maps, official conditions, and your own judgment in the field.

Year in Epicrest, gathered once a year

Year in Epicrest collects a season of outings into a single recap, the months you got outside most, the places and routes that defined the year, your records, and how your Planning Health shaped up. It is a private moment of reflection rather than a post, though the in-app image-card handoff lets you share a recap card if you choose to. Outdoor Insights, Planning Health, and Year in Epicrest are part of Epicrest Pro, with a useful free preview so you can see the value first. Pro is an optional auto-renewing marketplace subscription, and the applicable store shows final local pricing before purchase.
