Epicrest 2.3 — now on iPhone and Android
Epicrest 2.3 brings the privacy-first outdoor foundation established on iPhone to Android and delivers a major iPhone update. It is available from the App Store and Google Play.
New on Android
- Explore worldwide places, detailed maps, AR peak identification, Journal, Plans, offline areas, sharing, and Epicrest Pro in one native app.
- See bundled, downloaded, and cached places and trails first, keep them visible while panning or changing styles, and use online results to fill gaps.
- Use ARCore with true-north alignment, guided calibration, manual adjustments, confidence guidance, an always-available tutorial, and a CameraX fallback.
- With Pro, choose an offline area's center and radius on the map, then safely pause, resume, cancel, retry, or repair the download.
- Plan with richer access, alert, facility, weather, trail, road, and boundary context where reliable data is available.
- Create on-device social cards, subscribe or restore through Google Play, and optionally reconcile encrypted Journal media through Google Drive.
- Keep the location marker above the Home card, open Journal photos full-screen, collapse Offline readiness, and remove local account data during account deletion.

Epicrest 2.2 - A fresh, modern redesign
- A modern, flat design that now works in both light and dark and follows your system appearance, replacing the previous dark-only liquid-glass look.
- New navigation: a sidebar menu for Profile, Favorites, Offline Packs, License, Outdoor Insights, and Settings, with search moved to the top-right.

Epicrest 2.1 - Earlier map foundation update
- Migrated the map from Apple MapKit to Mapbox for a faster vector map, consistent styling, and the foundation for true offline maps, with local-first painting and a persistent map session.
- Added a base-map style picker - Outdoor (the new default), Vista (3D terrain and landmarks), Satellite, and Topo - plus optional 3D terrain and focus-on-map for any route or place.
- Drew trail outlines and park, public-land, and protected-area boundaries directly on the map, with peaks and trails painting first.
- Rebuilt offline downloads on Mapbox's native tile store: with Epicrest Pro, pick an exact area on an interactive map and save its Outdoor map, peaks, places, routes, and a weather snapshot, with background downloads you can pause and resume. Pro can create or update regions up to 50 miles, up to 15 packs can remain installed per device, and Free can read and manage compatible packs already installed.
- Reworked weather map layers away from OpenWeather map tiles, with clearer legends, 100% default opacity, stronger palettes, and unit-aware temperature, wind, and precipitation scales.
Map, Trails, and Offline Maps
Version 2.3 keeps the Outdoor default plus Vista, Satellite, and Topo styles, 3D terrain, trail and park boundary outlines, and focus-on-map. It prefers the fastest local source first: the current map session, bundled worldwide cells, installed country/regional packs, offline packs, CDN packs, and backend repair only when local data is missing or stale.
Focused map requests now prioritize the selected destination over current location and prior viewport, fit the exact route or place geometry where possible, and remain stable through style reloads. Online Pro focus can use satellite imagery and 3D terrain; offline and Free focus still open the destination with the best available map.
Trails are first-class outdoor places. Trail records can appear on the map and in detail flows as trails, while trailheads remain linked route context. Dense areas use grouped markers so panning and zooming remain responsive.
Offline downloads now run on Mapbox's native tile store. Epicrest Pro can pick an exact area on an interactive map and create or update an Outdoor pack containing its map, peaks, places, routes, and a weather snapshot for use with no signal. Pro supports regions up to 50 miles, up to 15 packs can remain installed per device, and Free can read and manage compatible packs already installed.
New Epicrest Pro map packs on iPhone and Android use an authorized Mapbox Outdoor provider and do not bulk-download the standard OpenStreetMap tile service. Free can continue to read and manage compatible packs already installed, including supported legacy raster packs.
Weather Maps
Pro weather map layers can show radar, precipitation, temperature, wind, and cloud context where provider tiles are configured and available. Epicrest prefers MapTiler weather tiles and can use IEM NEXRAD as a radar fallback.
Each layer now includes a short scale note: radar reflectivity, estimated precipitation rate, near-surface air temperature, near-surface wind speed, or cloud cover. Temperature, wind, and precipitation scales respect metric or imperial units.
All Outdoor Places
Epicrest now carries a compact worldwide place layer and progressively upgrades it with richer regional, offline, cached, and live context. Search and Home use stronger classification and quality ranking so meaningful outdoor destinations appear before incidental utility records.
Place cards adapt to the profile of the place, with Can I Go Now?, current alerts, Visit Details, Facilities, family and sports context, Boundary Outline, Walks And Trails, weather, Save, Plan, Journal, directions, and reviewed improvement flows where supported. Cached content remains while fresher detail loads.
Outdoor Insights
Outdoor Insights replaces the older stats surface with local trends, records, Planning Health, known gain, favorite routes, place summaries, and Year in Epicrest for Pro users.
Manual, Privacy, and Terms
The v2.3 manuals and policy disclosures describe the public release's worldwide local-first corpus, flexible search, focused maps, progressive place hydration, AR calibration and provider disclosures, Pro-only user-selected offline areas, private iCloud sync, optional encrypted Google Drive Journal-media sync, marketplace subscriptions, account deletion, and the safety limits of place, route, alert, weather, and map data.
