These Terms of Use and End User License Agreement govern your use of Epicrest. By installing, creating an account, subscribing, or using the app, you agree to these terms.
Release applicability: Epicrest 2.3 is publicly available for iPhone and Android. References below to the App Store, Google Play, iCloud, and Google Drive describe the options available on supported platforms.
Epicrest is operated by Epicalin, LLC. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are a minor in your jurisdiction, you must have parental or guardian permission.
You are responsible for keeping credentials secure and for activity under your account. Use the support form if you suspect unauthorized access. You may delete your account in the app from Settings → Delete Account, or submit a verified request through the public account-deletion page if you cannot access the app.
Epicrest is licensed, not sold, to you. Epicalin, LLC reserves all rights in Epicrest that are not expressly granted in these Terms.
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to download, install, and use Epicrest on devices that you own or control, solely for your personal, non-commercial use and as permitted by the applicable app marketplace's usage rules. This license also applies to updates, content, materials, subscriptions, and services made available through Epicrest unless separate terms are provided.
In Android 2.3 release-candidate builds, Epicrest includes ARCore functionality provided by Google on supported devices. Your use of ARCore functionality is subject to the then-current Google Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.
You may not distribute Epicrest or make it available over a network where it could be used by multiple devices at the same time except as permitted by the applicable marketplace rules. You may not transfer, rent, lease, lend, sell, sublicense, commercialize, copy, modify, translate, create derivative works from, reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, attempt to derive source code, remove proprietary notices, scrape or overload Epicrest peak, place, route, facility, weather, alert, or contribution services, or use Epicrest in a way that violates law or third-party rights. Remove Epicrest before transferring a device that contains it.
Epicrest may provide access to Epicalin and third-party services, websites, maps, location services, weather services, public data sources, and other external services. You use those external services at your sole risk. We are not responsible for examining or evaluating third-party services and do not guarantee their accuracy, availability, language support, or suitability for any location.
You retain ownership of journal entries, notes, photos, tags, saved places, saved routes, outdoor plans, visit records, AR captures, route selections, weather snapshots, place-improvement suggestions, and other content you create. You grant Epicrest the technical permissions needed to store, display, process, review, share at your direction, and sync that content back to you and across your own devices, including through private iCloud where enabled. In v2.3 release-candidate builds, that permission also covers optional encrypted Google Drive media sync. We do not use journal or planning content for advertising and will never sell it.
Journal photos and AR captures attached to Journal are not backend photo data. In the public iPhone app, they live on your device and, if iCloud sync is enabled, in your private iCloud account. In v2.3 release-candidate builds, Journal media can also be encrypted into Google Drive's hidden app-data folder. On iPhone, an AR capture attached to a Plan can sync through private iCloud but is not included in the Google Drive Journal-media path. Shared and saved AR capture files are exported without EXIF or precise location metadata by default.
Custom avatar photos are local-first and are not uploaded to Epicrest backend servers. On iPhone, optional avatar iCloud sync can store the cropped avatar in your private iCloud account. In Android 2.3 release-candidate builds, custom avatars remain device-local and are not transferred by the separate encrypted Google Drive path for Journal media.
Peak sharing links point to public Epicrest peak records. Sharing a peak link does not publish your private Journal entries, outdoor plans, saved state, photos, notes, tags, or account information.
Place and trail improvement suggestions are submitted for review. You grant Epicrest permission to review, moderate, store, and use accepted factual corrections and optional submitted photos to improve public place and route data, including reviewed public thumbnails, galleries, or specific-area context when you recommend photos for profile use. Recommending a submitted photo for public profile use is optional and separate from submitting a factual correction. Suggestions do not immediately change canonical records and should not include private information about other people.
Social-post image cards and editable captions are generated on device for sharing at your direction. Notes from a Journal entry or plan may be included in the editable draft for your review. In Android 2.3 release-candidate builds, Epicrest repaints a selected Journal photo into a new export without copying the source filename, EXIF, or GPS metadata. If you use third-party integrations, import photos, save to the device photo library, use the system share sheet, or open content in Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads, TikTok, or another destination, those interactions are governed by the third party's terms. Content you choose to share outside Epicrest is controlled by the destination you select.
Epicrest offers an optional paid auto-renewable subscription tier named Epicrest Pro. Public iPhone purchase and billing are handled by Apple's App Store. Google Play purchase references currently describe the Android 2.3 release candidate until its public listing is live.
Epicrest Free remains useful without payment: outdoor discovery, core peak and place information, full available live trail and approach-road detail, unlimited Journal and Plans history, saved places, core weather, AR labels and captures, private iCloud sync where supported, Post on Social, the ability to read and manage compatible offline packs already installed on the device, and no ads. Epicrest Pro can create or update Outdoor offline regions up to 50 miles, with up to 15 packs installed per device, and also unlocks Topo and Satellite maps with 3D terrain, detailed weather and weather map layers, detailed cached weather fields, prominence, isolation, and advanced nearby peak filters where available, premium AR templates and overlays, up to 15 manually added Journal photos per entry, PDF/GPX export, Outdoor Insights, and Planning Health while funding backend services and continued development without advertising.
To the extent these Terms conflict with marketplace terms for a purchase, the marketplace's terms control that purchase and billing relationship.
A store purchase grants the applicable marketplace license or subscription entitlement; it does not transfer ownership of Epicrest. Purchase restoration and cross-device access remain subject to marketplace rules, the store account that made the purchase, and Epicrest's verification that the entitlement belongs to the signed-in Epicrest account.
Epicrest Pro includes creation and updating of Outdoor offline regions up to 50 miles, detailed cached weather fields, topographic and satellite maps with 3D terrain, prominence, isolation, and advanced nearby peak filters where available, detailed weather and weather map layers, premium AR capture templates and overlays where supported, up to 15 manually added photos per Journal entry, richer statistics including Planning Health, PDF/GPX export, and support for an ad-free Epicrest. Up to 15 compatible packs can remain installed per device. Free retains full available live trail and road detail, the ability to read and manage compatible packs already installed, existing photo viewing/removal, AR capture attachments, unlimited Journal and Plans history, and Post on Social. Available features can vary by platform, device, region, data availability, and app version and may evolve over time.
Our Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how device-local, private iCloud, and account-synced data work. It also covers encrypted Google Drive media in the v2.3 release candidates until those versions are publicly released.
You can delete your account from Settings → Delete Account or use the public deletion request page. Deletion removes the active server account, authentication sessions, subscription receipt and ownership records held by Epicrest, summit/place Journal metadata, saved and planned data, personal-sync records, offline-pack history, and signed-in support, issue, and feature submissions with their attachments and replies.
In Android 2.3 release-candidate builds, deletion also removes that account's local Journal and photos, personal preferences and sync records, custom avatar, Drive binding and usable media key, reminders, queued work, and user-scoped offline packs while preserving public map caches and device-wide appearance choices. Other device-local copies must be removed through the app or by deleting the app as applicable. Private iCloud content, encrypted Google Drive app data created by a release-candidate build, and user-created exports remain until you remove them through their provider or storage controls. Account deletion does not cancel an Apple subscription or a Google Play testing subscription.
Account-linked operational and audit records may be retained only after account, IP, device, and free-form identifying details are removed. Routine restricted service backups are retained for up to 14 days and are not used to recreate a deleted account in the live service. Narrow records may be retained when required for law, fraud prevention, security, or disputes, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Google Play-distributed copies are also subject to the Google Play Terms of Service and applicable Google Play subscription, billing, refund, and licensing rules.
These additional terms apply if you downloaded Epicrest from Apple's App Store. Epicalin, LLC, not Apple, is responsible for Epicrest and its content. Epicalin, LLC is responsible for maintenance and support for Epicrest only as required by applicable law and these Terms. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Epicrest.
If Epicrest fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price, if any, in accordance with Apple's policies and applicable law. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Epicrest.
Epicalin, LLC, not Apple, is responsible for addressing claims by you or any third party relating to Epicrest, including product claims, legal or regulatory claims, consumer protection claims, and claims that Epicrest infringes a third party's intellectual property rights.
You represent that you are not located in a country or region subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You may not use, export, or re-export Epicrest except as authorized by United States law and the laws of the jurisdiction where Epicrest was obtained, and you may not use Epicrest for purposes prohibited by United States law.
Epicrest and its documentation are commercial items under U.S. federal acquisition rules and are licensed to U.S. Government end users only with the same rights granted to all other end users under these Terms. You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using Epicrest, including Apple, Google, ARCore, Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, weather, network, device, iCloud, and Google Drive terms that apply to the feature you use.
Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms for App Store-distributed copies of Epicrest and may enforce the App Store-related terms against you. Apple's standard licensed application EULA is available at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/.
Epicrest is an informational tool. It is not a substitute for judgment, training, navigation equipment, or guidance from experienced outdoor leaders or land managers.
You are solely responsible for your safety and the safety of your party. Carry appropriate gear, check current conditions with authoritative sources including land managers, rangers, official closure notices, permit offices, recent trip reports, and weather or avalanche authorities, and turn back when in doubt. Do not rely on Epicrest for emergency navigation.
You agree not to use Epicrest to enter private property without permission, attempt to reach closed areas, submit false or misleading place or trail updates, violate park, public-land, trail, campground, permit, leash, wildlife, or conservation rules, harass or harm others, post unlawful or harmful content in any future community feature, interfere with other users or systems, or use the service for commercial scraping, surveillance, or resale. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
Epicrest, its logos, software, design, documentation, and original content are owned by Epicalin, LLC and protected by intellectual property laws. Public and third-party geographic, weather, weather-map, map, and topographic data retain their original licenses and attribution requirements. New Epicrest Pro offline map downloads on iPhone and in Android 2.3 release-candidate builds use an authorized Mapbox provider; if Mapbox is not configured, the map portion stops instead of switching to an unauthorized bulk source. Previously installed legacy raster packs may remain readable. Geographic data includes OpenStreetMap contributors, and an attributed standard OpenStreetMap map may be used as an interactive fallback where permitted, but Epicrest does not bulk-download the standard OpenStreetMap tile service for new offline packs. You may not extract, redistribute, or bulk-download provider map tiles outside the authorized app flows.
Epicrest is provided “as is” and “as available”, with all faults and without warranties of any kind, express, implied, or statutory, including warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, quiet enjoyment, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app, data, recommendations, facility facts, user suggestions, submitted review photos, external services, or subscriptions will be error-free, continuously available, secure, complete, or accurate. No oral or written information from us creates a warranty.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Epicrest and its providers shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, business interruption, personal injury, property damage, outdoor incidents, travel costs, or inability to use Epicrest arising out of use of the app, even if we have been advised that such damages are possible. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to Epicrest is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or USD 50.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Epicrest, Epicalin, LLC, its officers, employees, contractors, providers, and agents from claims, losses, damages, liabilities, and expenses arising out of your breach of these Terms, misuse of Epicrest, violation of law, violation of third-party rights, or outdoor activity decisions. You may stop using Epicrest at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially violate these Terms, create risk for others, or if we discontinue the service. On termination, the sections that by their nature should survive will survive.
We may modify these Terms. If changes are material, we will notify you in-app, on this page, or by email where available. Continuing to use Epicrest after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
Claims between you and Epicalin, LLC arising from these Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be resolved in state or federal courts located in Illinois unless applicable law or applicable marketplace terms require a different law or forum.
